Closer

Dawn hovered in the doorway to Willow’s bedroom. Even though she had been living out of home for a good two years and was living in the university dorms, she still never just barged into Willow’s room like she may have as a teen.

It didn’t take long for Willow to look up and when she did, she smiled and told Dawn to come in.

“How are you, Dawnie?” Willow asked as she sat down on her bed, a couple of spell ingredients in hand.

Dawn nodded. “Good,” she said. “Just taking a break from study.”

“I am so proud of you,” Willow said, patting the bed for Dawn to sit down as well. “Taking all those hard chem courses.”

Dawn shrugged. “It’s no biggie.”

“Oh but it is. I mean, Buffy was always smart but she never really applied herself like you do,” Willow said. “It’s nice not to be the only academically smart one in this family.”

Dawn sat and watched as Willow arranged some of the ingredients.

“So, whatcha doing?”

“This?” Willow asked and Dawn nodded. “Oh, just a little spell I’ve been working on for the other slayers. Kind of like a locator spell but I’ve tweaked it. I’ll be able to pin point without the orange cloud of smoke.”

Dawn’s nose crinkled at the memory of her first encounter with the orange smoke.

They sat in silence for a little while, Dawn just watching Willow. She had come to realise over her last few stays at the new Summers’ house that she had feelings for Willow.

She was the only person that really looked at her like she was worthy and Dawn found herself craving that. She wanted to keep that feeling she had whenever she was around Willow. It was going to be hard, Dawn knew that but she thought it was worth telling the red-head how she felt.

“Hey, Willow?” Dawn started.

Willow looked up. “Yeah, Dawnie?”

“H-how do you tell when you’re in love?” she asked.

Willow gave her a small smile. “You just know,” she replied. “It’s like…” Willow looked around the room and then shook her head. She held out her open palm and suddenly there was a ball of fire sitting in it. “It’s like fire.”

Dawn looked at her, slightly confused.

“The fire is inside you and whenever you see the person you love it gets brighter and bigger and it fills you up.” As Willow spoke, the ball of fire grew bigger and brighter and Dawn found herself staring in awe.

“And your legs get all jelly and your heart beats faster and slower at the same time,” Willow continued. “Why? Who do you love? Is it Xander again? Because he’s not in the right state to be dealing with that.”

Dawn shook her head. “It’s not Xander,” she said.

“Oh cool,” Willow smiled again, fire still sitting in her palm. “So, who is it?”

Dawn took her chance. She closed the gap between them, lips pressing against Willow’s own. She couldn’t believe she had finally done it. She was telling Willow that it was her, that she was the one she was in love with.

Willow pulled back, eyes wide and fire no longer in her palm. “Oh, Dawnie…”

Dawn searched Willow’s eyes and got off the bed, scrambling to get out of the room. She found herself unable to leave as Willow had put up a force field to stop her.

She kept her head down as Willow approached her, not wanting to see the rejection in her eyes. Willow placed a hand on her arm.

“I… I’m flattered,” Willow started. “But…”

“It’s okay,” Dawn said. “It was stupid of me.”

“Not stupid,” Willow said softly. “Never stupid. I just have Kennedy now, and you’re like my own little sister and I’m not so big on the incest.”

Dawn chuckled despite herself and looked up at Willow.

“You’ll find someone,” Willow said. “It’s just not me.”

Dawn nodded. “Can you not tell Buffy?”

Willow nodded. “Your secret is safe with me,” she replied with a smile. “If you want, Kennedy can take you out? Find you a nice girlfriend?”

Dawn shook her head. “No, it’s cool,” she replied. “I can do it myself.”

Willow squeezed Dawn’s arm gently. “I’m here if you ever want to talk.”

“Thanks,” Dawn replied with a smile. She hugged Willow tightly and was pleased when Willow hugged her back.

The broke apart and Dawn left Willow in her room. A part of her knew that Willow was her crush because she sort of idolised her but she knew that it wouldn’t work out. And Willow was right, she would find someone. She just had to look.
