Anger
Dougie wasn’t a very angry person by nature. It took a fair amount for him to get riled up. He liked to think that not much bothered him in life. He loved touring with his three best friends, he loved hanging out with them, hell he was even dating one of them. That had to count for something.
He had a pretty good life. Sure he went through some tough times during his adolescence but then most people did. He was hurt when his father left and even more hurt when he found out that it was for another woman. He never told his band mates this, as he found it too shameful to talk about.
Dougie didn’t want them to think any less of him because he only had one parent. Then just after their first album was released, Danny’s father left for another woman as well. Suddenly, Dougie wasn’t alone in that situation.
He still didn’t tell his friends why his father left, and to them all, it was a closed case. They never spoke of it.
Dougie saw himself as a fairly laid back person and pretty easy to get along with. Sure, he was weird, he kept and bread lizards, but that was what he liked to do. Tom had his flying, Danny had his studio and Harry, well Harry had cricket on the side. All things they loved to do. Dougie had his lizards.
It took quite a lot to get Dougie angry, but when he was angry, it got pretty scary.
Harry and he had been dating for about two years and had been living together as a couple for about six months. They were still getting used to each other’s habits and the way they did things.
Harry liked his Marmite kept in the fridge, while Dougie liked to keep glasses in the freezer to keep them cool for when he had a drink after work. The things they never really did when they lived as a foursome they were now adjusting to as a couple.
It was Dougie’s routine that he feed his lizards after cleaning their cage on a morning. Imagine his surprise when he found that the cage was left open and that his two most precious lizards had escaped.
He was frantic with worry. They weren’t just pets to him; they were extensions of him, of his life. They represented something that if he ever tried to explain it to his band mates, they would surely never understand. Tom may come close but even he would have trouble comprehending why they meant so much to Dougie.
He spent the entire morning searching for them around the house with no help. Harry had gone to watch a cricket game that morning and wouldn’t be home until after lunch.
Dougie hunted for his pets in every place he could think of but to no luck. He was almost in tears when he couldn't find them by noon. They would surely starve or die of thirst.
When Harry came back late that afternoon Dougie was in Jerry and Zukie’s room, holding a dead Jerry in his hands, crying softly.
Harry knelt down next to him, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Oh Dougie,” he breathed.
Dougie let the tears fall freely onto his shirt, not caring that his lover was seeing him this way. He had just lost one of his pets; he damn well had the right to cry.
“What happened?” Harry asked after a long while.
Dougie shrugged. “I don’t know,” he answered truthfully. “I got up to feed them and clean their cage this morning, and both of them were missing. I found Zukie in toilet behind the bowl and Jerry I found in the laundry, dead.”
Dougie’s tears flowed freely down his cheeks as he held his dead lizard in his hands.
“Dougie,” Harry started shakily. “I fed them this morning.”
Dougie’s head snapped up to face his boyfriend. “What?” he asked.
Harry visibly swallowed. “Uh, yeah, you were asleep still so I thought I would feed them.”
Dougie frowned.
“I am sure I closed the door properly.”
Dougie stood up, nearly knocking Harry over in the process. “How sure are you, Harry?”
Harry’s eyes widened. “Pretty sure…” he trailed off.
“Obviously you weren’t careful enough,” Dougie snapped. “And they got out. And now Jerry is dead because of you!”
“Dougie, I’m sorry,” Harry said honestly. “I would never leave the door open on purpose.”
Dougie shook his head. “I don’t want to hear it, Harry, you left the door open and Jerry suffered because of it.”
“Doug, please.”
“No!” Dougie snapped.
Dougie glared at Harry, who just stayed standing in the room facing him.
“Dougie, I’m sorry,” Harry whispered. “I love you.”
“Sorry’s not good enough, Harry, now go.”
“What?” Harry asked, taken a back. “Why?”
“You just don’t get it, do you?” Dougie’s voice was getting louder with every sentence.
Harry meekly shook his head.
“Of course not, you don’t give a stuff about anyone but yourself!” Dougie snapped, eyes narrowing in Harry’s direction. If looks could kill…
“Dougie you damn well know that isn’t true,” Harry said, getting angry himself.
Dougie advanced on Harry, who backed away with every step. “Harry get out of here before I do something you regret.”
“Dougie, don’t be silly,” Harry tried to reason.
“Harry, don’t tell me what to do,” Dougie had gone from angry to extremely fucked off.
Harry looked at him with wide eyes. “Doug, please. I never meant to hurt you.”
“Well you did, and you are annoying me by being here, so go!”
Harry pleaded with him, saying he didn’t understand why Dougie was acting like he was. They continued arguing over seemingly pointless things and the next thing Dougie knew knew, he was throwing a vase at Harry’s head screaming at him all the while.
Harry looked up at him, horrified and he left the house.
Dougie collapsed on the floor, sobbing loudly. He had never been so angry in his life before and he couldn’t believe he got angry at Harry like that.
He didn’t know if Harry would come back and right now, he didn’t blame him if he never did.
It was then as Dougie looked at the door that Harry left through, wishing he had never made him leave.
Dougie decided he never wanted to be angry again.
